Diversity in Popular U.S. Literature

English 1100 

To fulfill my General Education in the Humanities and Diversity I took English 1100, Diversity in Popular U.S. Literature. The popular literature examined was Science Fiction. Throughout the course we studied the genre as it applied to issues in diversity and how the Science Fiction, as a genre, can mediate these issues and teach us tolerance and accommodation for diversity.

The paper attached is one of my best and demonstrates how the genre of Science Fiction tackles what has come to be called "the alien other." The paper examines a short story and a poem and how these pieces both aim to break down barriers by defamiliarization to expose similarities, not differences. 

I chose this paper as my signature assignment to demonstrate my versitile, college-level writing and also my love of the Science Fiction genre. By showcasing what a genuinely developed and complex genre Science Fiction is, I hope to support further academic analysis of this oft-underestimated style.
